Candelabra 2024 – Guiding Lights

Guiding Lights

It took an entire month of full time work to make the soft clay piece that was sent off to the foundry in mid October, 2024. The clay original gets destroyed in the mold making process.  Here a some photos of the completed bronzes. Scroll down for the progress photos and a video of the soft clay original, including a shot of it crated to send to the foundry.

The edition size is limited to 15. To purchase ‘Guiding Lights’ visit the Art Shop link or contact Michael directly.

Guiding Lights

A couple illuminate each other as two children look up to the light.

I have always delighted in how light and form are united. Over the years I’ve aimed to have light come from within my paintings.  In moving into sculpture over the past decade I maintain the same delight playing with light and form.  When fresh candles are lit the four figures will be illuminated from above, but as the candles melt the light  morphs to a dramatic silhouette. The two adults are illuminating each other, as they twist around to look to the other. The faces of the innocent children look upward with curiosity and wonder.

As I sculpt I reminisce, savouring the comfort of my tight family unit, pondering  preciousness, impermanence and the beauty of the fleeting light. This is a continuation of making pieces and finding meaning as I reflect on time, family, hope – life…

I learned that ‘candelabra’ is the plural of ‘candelabrum’. But most people use the word candelabra for the singular candelabrum.

I am calling this one ‘Guiding Lights’ – MA October 2024
