says as much about the viewers
as it does about the bout taking place in the ring?

I decided to make a boxing painting. I loved boxing when I was younger! Now that I am older my knees go weak as I watch people get the daylights knocked out of them, and I seem to feel every blow.

With fondness I recall being a kid and getting to stay up later than usual to watch Muhammad Ali fights. Being the youngest of five kids, I may have been considered to be the runt of the litter.  I was gangly, somewhat uncoordinated, and wore a brace on my right leg for a couple of years to correct a malformed ‘hip in socket’. I remember my uncle Richard taking my brother Stephen and I to a training gym, lacing us up with gloves and protective helmets on and pushing us together in what may have been an attempt to toughen me up. (Look at me now UNK!)

I laugh at it now, but about halfway into completing this painting there was the realisation that I was unconsciously painting my son and I, with my son knocking out his old man’s teeth; it’s probably a recognition of how we were butting heads at the time about our thoughts around a few social issues of the day. ”    – M.A. – from notes on paintings
